Description
This winter design of Senzoku-ike—sharing its subject with a companion snow-scene composition—depicts the small Ota Ward pond under accumulated snowfall, a condition that strips the site to its essential tonal and structural elements. Snow on the Hikawa shrine's roof and the arched stone bridge creates horizontal white registers that anchor the composition, while the dark water below carries pale reflections of the snow-covered shore. Two recorded versions of this subject may differ in season detail, viewpoint, or edition—Hasui returned to favored sites under varying conditions throughout his career. The printing of snow on dark water was among the more precise technical challenges in the shin-hanga workshop: the pale tones of the reflected sky had to be graded into the slightly deeper tones of the water's shaded interior without losing the distinction between surface reflection and depth. Both versions reflect Hasui's consistent treatment of Senzoku-ike as a contemplative urban refuge.
