Description
This print depicts the Hie Shrine (Hie Jinja) in snowfall, likely the celebrated Akasaka Hie Shrine in Tokyo, set within its wooded hillside precinct. "Shato" suggests the forested, elevated character of the shrine grounds. Hasui's snow scenes are among his most technically demanding works, requiring precise registration across multiple blocks to render layered whites against graduated gray skies achieved through bokashi pressing. Stone lanterns and a torii gate emerging from accumulated snow were compositional anchors he returned to repeatedly in winter landscapes. The palette in such prints typically suppresses warm tones, with the cold blue-gray of an overcast sky establishing the atmospheric tone. The stillness of a deserted Shinto precinct under snow aligned closely with Hasui's preferred mood of quiet solitude.
