Description
Hinuma is a shallow coastal lagoon in Ibaraki Prefecture, edged by reed beds and the low rooftops of fishing settlements near Mito. Hasui produced several compositions of this site, likely during a winter sketching trip to the region. This version probably positions the viewer near the water's edge, with cut reeds and bare shrubs in the foreground establishing spatial depth, and a broad expanse of still gray water receding to a low horizon. A cold, overcast sky rendered in graduated gray-blue bokashi dominates the upper half of the composition. Flat-bottomed fishing craft typical of shallow estuarine waters may be pulled up on shore or moored at a simple landing. The strong horizontal emphasis — low horizon, wide sky, unbroken water surface — places Hinuma among Hasui's flat-country landscape subjects, a counterpart to his better-known mountain and shrine scenes. The muted palette of blues, grays, and whites is unified by the diffuse light of an overcast winter afternoon.
