Description
One of the titled 雪の宮嶋 impressions, this print shows Miyajima's Itsukushima Shrine in winter, the island's forested hillside and distinctive tidal architecture combining to create one of the most compositionally rich settings in Hasui's landscape catalogue. The Miyajima subjects were reissued multiple times across his career, and this impression likely differs from adjacent editions in the handling of the sky bokashi or the ink density in the shrine's shadow areas. The O-torii gate, partially submerged at high tide, is a probable compositional element, its reflection broken or softened by the winter water surface. Hasui visited Miyajima during sketching tours of western Japan, and his direct observation of the site grounds even the most formally composed versions in specific topographic detail.
