Description
Snow at Sekiguchi records a winter view of the Sekiguchi area in Bunkyo, Tokyo — a district characterized by modest residential streets and the Kanda River corridor. Hasui made several versions of this scene, drawn to the area's combination of natural topography and traditional urban fabric. The print likely depicts a lane or embankment with snow-covered ground, rooftops heavy with accumulated white, and bare zelkova or willow branches providing linear contrast against a graduated sky. In his Tokyo meisho-e, Hasui consistently sought locations where the landscape retained a quality of stillness distinct from the busier commercial districts of the city. Sekiguchi, with its gentle valley along the Kanda River, provided that quality. The technical execution would involve multiple color blocks for the sky gradation, separate blocks for shadow areas in the snow, and the keyblock providing structural definition to the architectural and natural elements.
