Description
This is a later printing or alternate edition of Hasui's recurring Tsukishima snow subject. Tsukishima, a landfill island connected to the Tokyo waterfront, offered Hasui a scene of traditional urban architecture — merchant houses, canal walls, and fishing boats — persisting against modern development. Variations between editions of this composition may include differences in the density of snowfall rendering, the tone of the winter sky, or the degree of reflected light on canal water. The bokashi gradations used to render overcast winter skies were reworked from block to block as the woodblocks wore with repeated printing, resulting in subtle chromatic differences across impressions.
