Description
Among the multiple printings of Hasui's Ueno Toshogu Shrine composition, this impression captures the shrine precinct in deep winter. The Toshogu's stone lanterns, numbering more than two hundred along the main approach, present a rhythmic architectural sequence that translates well into the woodblock medium through repeated block elements and careful spacing. Snow in these prints is rendered through the reserved tone of the washi paper itself — areas left unprinted or lightly washed — contrasted with the dark grey and brown of bare trees and stone. The shrine's historical associations with the Tokugawa shogunate gave the site cultural weight beyond its visual appeal, which Hasui's format elevated into a contemplative landscape image.
