Description
Ishinomaki, a port city in Miyagi Prefecture on the Pacific coast of Tohoku, provided Hasui with a subject combining harbor infrastructure, traditional townscape architecture, and the dramatic winter weather of northeastern Japan. This composition likely depicts the city's waterfront or central district under active snowfall, with snowflakes rendered as white dots or short strokes printed from a dedicated block against the darker sky and building surfaces. Hasui traveled extensively through Tohoku during the 1920s and 1930s, documenting regional towns before post-war industrialization altered their character significantly. The flat Ishinomaki plain and its rivers would have offered low horizontal compositions, with townscape elements — merchant houses, canal bridges, fishing boats — punctuating the snowy foreground. Graduated bokashi in the sky creates a sense of depth and atmospheric density consistent with heavy coastal snowfall.
