Description
Koshigoya (present-day Koshigaya) lies in Saitama Prefecture north of Tokyo, a flat agricultural and post-town landscape along the old Nikko Kaido road. Hasui's treatment of this inland subject likely emphasizes the horizontal expanse of the Kanto plain under snow, with low-roofed farmhouses or roadside structures providing scale and warmth against the cold white ground. The flat terrain of the region offered Hasui little topographic drama, encouraging compositions organized instead through the contrast of dark architectural elements, bare trees, and the infinite pale expanse of a snowy field or frozen paddy. Sky treatment through graduated bokashi — perhaps from pale slate to white — would reinforce the heavy overcast typical of inland winter. This print represents Hasui's practice of recording smaller, less-celebrated towns and landscapes rather than limiting his subject matter to famous scenic destinations.
