Description
This print presents Miyajima's Itsukushima Shrine complex under snow in clear winter conditions, capturing the island's celebrated architecture — the great O-torii gate, corridor galleries extending over tidal flats, and surrounding forested mountains — in the sharp light following snowfall. Clear-day winter compositions allowed Hasui to work with a brighter palette than his storm subjects, incorporating the strong vermillion of the shrine's lacquered woodwork against white snow and the blue of a cold sky. The Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site constructed on piers over tidal water, presented compositional challenges Hasui resolved by organizing the picture plane around the gate's reflection or the shrine corridors in perspective. Snow accumulated on shrine rooflines and torii crossbeams is typically rendered through the reserve printing of the washi paper ground, requiring precise multi-block registration to achieve clean white against the colored structures.
