Description
Among Hasui's several Miyajima winter compositions, this print approaches the island's snowy landscape from a distinct vantage or under different conditions than the bright-day versions. Miyajima's visual identity centers on the Itsukushima Shrine's floating O-torii gate in the tidal waters of Hiroshima Bay, and Hasui produced multiple compositional interpretations of the site across his career. A snow-covered Miyajima composition might prioritize the torii against falling or settled snow, the shrine corridors seen from the beach at low tide, or the view toward the forested Misen peak above the shrine precincts. The island's topography — steep, wooded mountains rising directly from the water — allowed Hasui to combine architectural and natural landscape elements within a single composition, a characteristic approach in his meisho-e work. Gradations between water, building, and mountain were achieved through careful bokashi application.
