Description
Maruyama Park in central Kyoto, situated behind the Yasaka Shrine, contains a celebrated weeping cherry tree (itoshidare-zakura) that became an iconic subject for artists and photographers. Hasui's print of the park in spring snow would capture the unusual sight of snow-dusted blossoms or bare weeping branches, their drooping forms particularly expressive against a grey sky. Unlike the architectural meisho-e of temple series, this composition centers on organic form — the gnarled and cascading branches — rendered with fine key-block lines against soft atmospheric washes. Published likely in the 1930s or 1940s, the print demonstrates Hasui's range within Kyoto subject matter, moving from monument to parkland.
