Description
A second impression of Hasui's Tokyo winter composition. Snow scene prints within Hasui's catalogue show pronounced variation across impressions due to the particular sensitivity of the bokashi gradation technique to paper moisture content, ink viscosity, and cumulative block wear. The graduated sky passage — moving from dense grey-blue at the sheet's upper edge through progressively lighter tones toward the horizon — required precise baren pressure calibration on dampened washi, conditions that shift subtly from session to session in the printing workshop. As a result, no two impressions of a Hasui snow scene are exactly alike in tonal character, and collectors distinguish early from later impressions largely through the richness and smoothness of these sky gradations. The snow shadow colors — typically lavender-grey in earlier, better-quality impressions, tending toward flatter blue or grey in later reprints — also serve as diagnostic markers for impression quality and generation.
