Description
Nikkō Tōshōgū is the elaborate mausoleum complex of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616) in the mountain forests of Tochigi Prefecture, its structures covered with lacquer, gilt bronze fittings, and polychrome carvings. Hasui produced multiple compositions of Tōshōgū, often isolating specific gates, cryptomeria-lined approaches, or structural details rather than attempting a comprehensive overview. This print likely shows a seasonal variant of the shrine — perhaps under autumn foliage or winter snow — with tall cedar trunks framing a gilded structure against a muted sky. The translation of lacquerwork and gold leaf into block-printed mineral pigments required careful color mixing and layering at the Watanabe workshop. Hasui's Nikkō shrine prints tend toward subdued atmospheric moods that contrast with the site's actual opulence, consistently subordinating architectural grandeur to the surrounding deep forest.
