Description
Snow-laden shrine architecture was among Hasui's most praised subjects, and the image of a vermillion torii gate set against a white winter landscape appears in several of his series. The contrast between the gate's lacquered red — printed with repeated passes of a warm oxide pigment — and the cold whites and blue-grays of snow-covered ground and overcast sky was a compositional strategy Hasui employed to great effect in prints such as his views of Akiba Shrine and Yushima Tenmangu. Snow accumulation atop the gate's horizontal kasagi lintel would be rendered through the white of the washi paper itself, with inked areas describing shadows beneath overhanging eaves and along roadways. The torii functions both as a structural anchor for the composition and as a marker of the liminal boundary between ordinary space and sacred ground.
