From the Selection of Views of Japan series — a curated group of Hasui's most praised regional subjects. Series membership adds collector appeal beyond that of standalone compositions. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A–D types) represent the most desirable impressions; atmospheric subjects (snow, rain, night) within this series command the highest prices. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Yasugi Kiyomizu Temple in Izumo Province, published in 1926 as part of the Selection of Views of Japan series, depicts the hillside temple complex at Yasugi in present-day Shimane Prefecture — a temple sharing the name of Kyoto's famous Kiyomizudera but set in the mountain landscape of the San'in coast. The Yasugi Kiyomizu, like its Kyoto namesake, is perched on a steep hillside with a veranda overlooking the valley below, and Hasui's oban composition likely captures this dramatic siting — the wooden hall cantilevering over the forested slope against a backdrop of mountain and sky. The bokashi sky gives the mountain atmosphere its characteristic soft depth.
