Description
This print of Zentsuji Temple in Kagawa Prefecture under rainfall presents the major pilgrimage site in a condition Hasui returned to repeatedly throughout his career. The diagonal rain lines printed across the composition create a consistent screen that simultaneously flattens spatial recession and implies depth through atmospheric haze—a paradox at the heart of ukiyo-e rain imagery. The five-story pagoda, one of the compound's most visually prominent elements, anchors the composition while wet stone, dripping eaves, and rain-blurred tree forms register through controlled tonal gradation. The economy of the composition—few competing elements, weather doing the structural work—reflects Hasui's mature landscape approach. The washi substrate absorbs the multiple ink passes required for convincing rainfall effects, with the paper's slight texture contributing to the impression of atmospheric moisture rather than working against it.
