Description
A child in snow — a small figure playing or walking through a winter landscape — is rendered in Maeda Masao's bold sosaku-hanga graphic manner, the child's bundled form against the white expanse of the snow creating a composition of stark simplicity and warmth. Figure subjects in snow were a consistent theme in Japanese woodblock printmaking, the child providing a human scale that activated the emotional possibilities of the winter setting. Maeda's self-carved direct line work gives the composition a graphic energy quite different from the softer atmospheric effects of shin-hanga snow scenes.
