Description
Mount Fuji at Sunset depicts the sacred mountain in the dramatic chromatic conditions of the evening sky, when the cone's western face catches the last light and the surrounding atmosphere intensifies into the reds, oranges, and purples of the sinking sun. Maeda Masao's treatment of the Fuji sunset brings his bold graphic line to one of the most painted and printed subjects in Japanese visual art, his direct self-carved approach finding a graphic equivalent for the mountain's iconic form that differs markedly from both the atmospheric gradations of shin-hanga and the compositional complexity of ukiyo-e Fuji imagery.
