Description
Temple Gate — a color woodblock print from the twentieth century — depicts the monumental gate structure (sanmon or niomon) of a Japanese Buddhist temple, the architectural form that marks the threshold between the secular world and the sacred precincts within. Maeda Masao's treatment of the temple gate subject brings his bold graphic line to one of Japanese architecture's most visually powerful forms, the gate's massive structural timbers, its bracket systems, and its guardian deities all rendered with the directness of a printmaker who carved his own blocks.
