Description
Tofuku Temple — the great Rinzai Zen complex in the southeastern corner of Kyoto, famous for its autumn maple foliage and its historic Sanmon gate — is depicted in Maeda Masao's bold sosaku-hanga style. The temple's extensive grounds, with their gardens, subtemples, and the famous Tsutenkyo bridge across the valley of autumn maples, provided a subject of great visual richness, and Maeda's direct carved line work gives the architectural forms a graphic solidity appropriate to the temple's imposing presence. The print captures the dignity of one of Kyoto's most historically significant Zen institutions.
