View of Mount Fuji from Lake Ashi — the classic composition looking across the Hakone caldera lake to the cone of Fuji rising beyond — is one of Maeda Masao's contributions to the tradition of Fuji imagery that spans the entire history of Japanese printmaking. The Lake Ashi view was among the most widely reproduced of all Fuji compositions, its combination of still foreground water reflecting the mountain, the pine-covered volcanic slopes of the Hakone caldera, and the perfect cone of Fuji beyond creating a compositional arrangement of exceptional pictorial beauty. Maeda's bold graphic style gave this classic subject a distinctly modern visual character.
