Chion Temple, Kyoto, from the series "Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition" (Nihon fukei shu II Kansai hen, Kyoto Chionin)
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan series — Hasui's most extensive documented series, covering regional landscapes across the entire country. These prints document local sites that often saw little representation in earlier ukiyo-e, giving them documentary as well as artistic value. Snow scenes within this collection (like Saishoin Temple in the Snow, $3,000 at Artelino 2023) command significant premiums. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Chion-in temple in Kyoto, depicted in Hasui's August 1933 print from the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition, is one of the largest and most architecturally impressive temple complexes in Japan — the main gate (Sanmon), built in 1619, is reputedly the largest wooden gate in the country. Hasui's composition likely captures the massive stone stairways and towering gate structures that make Chion-in such a singular destination among Kyoto's many temple precincts. The Kansai Edition series of the 1930s represents Hasui's mature phase, with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations and compositional confidence fully realized.
