From the Selection of Views of Japan series — a curated group of Hasui's most praised regional subjects. Series membership adds collector appeal beyond that of standalone compositions. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A–D types) represent the most desirable impressions; atmospheric subjects (snow, rain, night) within this series command the highest prices. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Gion Bridge at Hondo Amakusa, published in 1924 as part of the Selection of Views of Japan series, depicts the stone arch bridge spanning one of the waterways of Hondo — the main town of the Amakusa Islands in present-day Kumamoto Prefecture. Amakusa, historically significant as a center of hidden Christian culture following the seventeenth-century persecutions, is surrounded by the warm waters of the Yatsushiro Sea, and Hasui's composition likely captures the calm, almost Mediterranean quality of its harbors and bridges. The oban format and bokashi sky place this among the series' most technically accomplished compositions.
