Kasuga Shrine, Nara (Nara Kasuga jinja), from the series "Souvenirs of Travel, Second Series (Tabi miyage dai nishu)"
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
The Souvenirs of Travel series (First, Second, and Third Series, 1919–1922) represents Hasui's earliest major publishing relationship with Watanabe Shozaburo. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest — the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most original blocks, making surviving early round-seal impressions exceptionally valuable at $2,500–$8,000. Post-earthquake editions were printed from recut blocks and trade at lower prices.
Kasuga Shrine at Nara, from the Souvenirs of Travel, First Series published in February 1921, depicts the ancient Kasuga Taisha under the soft winter light of February — an early-career treatment of the same shrine that Hasui would revisit for the Kansai Edition more than a decade later. The February date gives this First Series print an unusual quality: the pre-spring forest, still bare or only just beginning to wake, surrounds the ancient red-painted shrine structures and stone lanterns with a spare clarity distinct from the Kansai Edition's spring version. The bokashi sky captures the quality of winter light filtering through the cedar canopy.
