Description
Noboribetsu Onsen — the great hot spring resort in the volcanic landscape of southern Hokkaido, famous for its "Valley of Hell" (Jigokudani) where multiple kinds of hot spring water emerge from the earth — is depicted with a "Nude" tag indicating a bathing figure subject. Maeda Masao's onsen print places a bather within the dramatic volcanic landscape of Noboribetsu, the natural hot spring setting legitimizing the nude figure within the conventions of Japanese bath scene imagery. The volcanic steam, the hot water, and the dramatic Jigokudani landscape give the composition unusual atmospheric intensity.
