$500–$4,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Maeda Masao's atmospheric mountain and landscape prints have a dedicated following among sosaku-hanga collectors.
Snow, Moon, and Cherries at Kiyomizudera — the three classic subjects of Japanese poetic beauty (setsu, getsu, ka: snow, moon, and flowers) combined in the setting of Kyoto's most famous hillside temple — is one of Maeda Masao's most thematically concentrated landscape subjects. The Kiyomizudera platform, projecting over the Otowa valley on its massive timber stilts, offered views of the cherry trees below and the city beyond, and the combination of flowering cherries, moonlit night, and snowfall — improbable in a single scene but possible in the poetic imagination — gave the composition its classical completeness.
