Yasaka Shrine in the Gion district of Kyoto after a snowfall — the historic shrine complex, which dates to the seventh century and presides over the Gion Festival, rendered in the silent, white transformation of post-snowfall. The combination of Kyoto's historic religious architecture and fresh snow was one of the most frequently depicted subjects in Japanese printmaking, the white expanse of snow making the vermilion of shrine gates and the dark wood of shrine buildings more vivid by contrast. Henmi's version brings his sosaku-hanga sensibility to this classic subject.
