1870s Japanese Woodblock Prints
133 prints from the 1870s in our collection, created during the Meiji Era (1868–1912). The Meiji era brought Japan's rapid modernization and opening to the West, profoundly disrupting traditional woodblock printing. As photography and lithography arrived, ukiyo-e declined commercially.
